You should set up a bench grinder with a wire brush in your work area so that you can blast the RTV off of diff covers, transmission pans, etc.

I honestly think i am just going to just suck the oil out with a vacuum pump I have for our boat engine oil. If I see metal in the oil then I will open them up. I have some new Cardone HD cv axles on the way also.

Brake cleaner works as well as or better than the wasp spray and it is usually cheaper.

Well, all the crap that you really want to get out is stuck at the bottom. Sucking the fluid out just puts clean fluid in with metal particulate and sludge that is at the bottom.

I pulled my rear diff off at only 10kmi. WOW, what a mess it was. It had all kinds of sludge and moisture in there. I sucked it empty as possible first and it got NOTHING that was of importance other than discolored fluid.
Using a rag and wiping the bottom of the case is important! I wiped out over 1cup of sludge from the rear diff.

I pulled the front case off at 13kmi this summer and it was nowhere near as bad as the back, but it still had some sludge at the bottom that sucking through a siphon pump could not get.(I measured almost 1/2cup of pure sludge that I wasn't able to suck out!

Moisture, dirt, oil breakdown. GL-5 is added to diff oils so it sticks to the gears. It's nasty stuff and collects all the crud. Without it, oil would sling off and render diff oil useless.

Well, I just pulled the front diff Cover and found very very little sludge. The oil didn't even smell burned or anything. It has never been changed since the truck was new and 135,000 miles. I guess the gears just spinning, with no torque, doesn't cause much wear and tear. I've used 4x4 maybe 10 minutes to do some light off roading and pulling the boat out on a slippery launch ramp.

I should have just sucked it out. HAHA Oh well.

Nah, you see, now you know how great of shape those gears are in!!! Not to mention, you have just refreshed the gasket seal!

I have a question. How in the world do you know what burnt diff oil smells like?...rofl.
GL-5 is the most rotton smell ever. I dont think you'd ever be able to tell if it had a burnt smell.

I helped a neighbor change the oil on his super duty. The guy let the truck go. It had about 250,000 miles on the rear diff oil. The Cover was all rusted because heat cooked the paint off. That stuff wreaked like no other.
