Default Problem noise in the front end

I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 and theres a knocking or clicking sound coming from my front end, also checked the gear oil in the front and it is black and smelling like its burn't. Just went to a shop and the guy said it could be the front wheel bearings but he never checked anything to pin point the problem. If anyone has some advise for me, I don't want to pay a grand to this guy and that is not the problem.

Thanks
Tony

Jack it up. Grab tire by top and bottom push/pull. check for play. W/B can be bad with no play. Clicking could be C/V shafts. Change that diff fluid. Should be done every 30kor so.
