Default Drag link fell off today

The drag link end (right side) snapped on my 06 Mega Cab today. Thank god I was in a parking lot at the time. The roads in Northern Illinois are like washboards, and I've been hearing a clunking noise for a few weeks. I figured it was probably worn bushings, and I was going to inspect when it got a little warmer. Well, today I pulled into a parking lot, and, lost all steering control. Got out to look, and there under the passenger side, was my drag link, on the ground. I had it flatbedded to a dealer with hopes that it will be covered under the recall I received last month.
But after reading the notice, it specifies left tie rod end. I can only hope they'll have mercy!!!!

I don't think you are not going to like the quote for repair cost at the dealership. I would guess they will recommend complete replacement of all the steering linkage.

He might be able to get most of it covered under the recall "IF" they can prove the right link failed b/c of the left link.... So there is SOME hope for him right now...

Keep us posted!

Dealer called me today. They said the problem was not a result of a faulty tie rod. They said as well, I need a new left and right tie rod, new pitman arm, new damper, and new connecting link. $2100+ alignment. They also said they weren't sure if they could remove the pittman arm, and in that case, add another $1500 for a new steering box. Needless to say I had it flatbedded to a shop I trust. Their diagnoses is I need a new damper, and right and left tie rods. They said the pittman arm and connecting link are fine. He quoted me 3hrs labor and $160 in parts (moog). Dealer was the same as far as labor time goes, which leaves $1800 in parts. Are you kidding me!!! The only reason I had it brought to the dealer, was because of the recall that I received last month. I didn't want to take a chance on replacement if I could get it done for free. Mistake. Total out the door from my local shop will be less than $400. These dealers make me sick. Cost me an extra $75 dollars to have it delivered from the dealer to the shop that's doing the repairs. I should have it back in a few hours.

I feel your pain..after market parts have a lock nut and washer. .oem is a compression fitting, and grease holds it togethier, now thiers no recall on this, I have pics under my user name as this hapoened to me...dealer will hit you up to install the newest version of the drag link thats subject to the current recall...and ball jonts and front u joints are non serviceable, after market parts have grease nipples. .

Mine fell off the hub right side.. and Chrysler Canada sucks...as per any mopar oem parts.

Possibly front hubs may need replacing if thiet rusted on the spindles ( in my case) hubs have to removed to get to the ball joints, u joints Stay away from a dealer, I had a independent garage re build my front stearing assembly for 1/4"of the dealers quote..

Not much has changed on the 2014 HD Rams..

If thiers a bright side to this, after narket parts are giving you a superior truck quality wise over a new truck designed to be glued together on warranty and fall apart when you fix it.

The problem is the dealers cannot get the old links from Mopar, so they go for the entire steering linkage replacement at outrageous prices. Glad you got it moved to another shop.

Picked up my truck, $350 out the door. Then proceeded to get an alignment. Truck steers and tracks like new. While I was waiting for the alignment, I browsed the estimate that the dealer gave me. $4,100 was their total. They wanted to replace EVERY steering component including the steering box. CROOKS!!!! I asked the guy who did the alignment how everything looked, and he said there were no problems with the alignment, and everything was tight. BTW, they wanted $138 just for the steering damper!!! Part only!!! Total for the parts that were actually needed $160. That was for the left and right tie rods, and the damper. Moog parts. Did I say CROOKS???

Yes, dealer's are crooks. They have the personality you can be hold hostage for owning a dodge and Only they can repair a 06 Ram...

On my drag link thiers now a lock nut and washer to prevent propping off the drag link...

Congratulations for your quick turn arround!!!

I have a very good relationship with my local dealership... they took care of me when I had a door stud problem (rust warranty reimbursed me for that too)... and they even gave my truck a nice once over and noted some issues that they saw (I knew of those going in and took care of them).

They also did a very nice job on my outer tie rod end & alignment under an extended warranty so I'm happy with my dealer.

Every dealership is different and I always look for service awards based upon customer feedback (not just the #1 service sales awards)... b/c usually the ones that get those are the ones that scam the hell out of people to make extra $....

Anyways glad you got it all taken care of and are back on the road!
