You may need to readjust the lock/latch assembly so that it hooks up better.
Can you recreate the problem by pushing/pulling on the tailgate? (if so, that confirms that you need to readjust it.)
I'm sorry to hear about your tail gate issues. It does sound like an issue may be present with latch system on the tail gate.
How long has it been occurring? How many times has this happened? Are there any events that prompt it to occur, such as a bump in the road?
Keep us posted,
Randomly while driving the tail gate opens, bumps or smooth roads. .no the tail gate is not falling off.
This is happening in cold wealthier conditions, -10 c or so. My canopy locks keep the tail gate secure, but if I dont lock them, it opens..
pushing or pulling in the inside of box or out side on the tail gate has no effect on a stationary truck..

Check the latches on each side of the tailgate. Make sure they are not "gunked up". I had a similar situation, and the latches has so much grease, grime, dirt, etc, that they were holding open. I would close the tailgate, and it would fall back open. I cleaned both latches, and now the tailgate works like normal.

How does it latch?
You're going to have to figure out how to recreate the problem while the truck is stationary to really see what's going on...
Full size topper..locks on glass door of topper hold tail gate in place..
I will try cleaning out the latchs...

Unscrew the access panel on your tailgate. You can lubricate the pull from there. Degrease and lubricate your end latches. Your latches are not fully engaging because they are dried out. Simple fix, should not take more than 15 minutes.
