Default Winding Noise From Rear of Truck

Hey all,

Just bought a 2004 Dodge Ram Sport 5.7L Hemi with 64k a few weeks back and am experiencing a winding noise coming from, what it seems to be, the rear of the truck.

The winding noise happens around 25mph and above (at least that is when I can actually hear it from inside the cab), ONLY when I am accelerating.

I searched the forum and saw that it may most likely be coming from the rear axle of the truck as some others have also had this problem.

So, I took the differential cover off and started to inspect the gears, I do see some wear on the spider gears, not pitting, but not much play, if any at all. Besides this there may be a little wear on the pinion, but I could not get a good picture of that. No wear on the ring gear.

There is also blue coloring on from what I understand are the axles (pictured) and means that it is getting to hot and discoloring, please correct me if I am wrong.

Like I said, if I am driving and not applying pressure to the throttle, I cannot hear the noise (not sure if it is very very faint or non-existent).

Also, when I switch from reverse to drive, the driveshaft turns more than it should, about 1/8th of a full turn and sometimes when in reverse it will make a loud creaking noise, which is definitely not normal, coming from the rear, not sure if these issues relate to one another.

The pictures are attached if they help display my issue better.

Anyone have experience with this issue or know a possible solution?!

Default Winding or moaning noise from back.

Mine did that because the "slip differential fluid" had worn out. I changed the diff. fluid with synthetic and added the correct amount of slip diff fluid and the noise went away.

Backlash is likely off on the gears. Could also be caused by the excess wear. Either live with it or get it serviced

What did the diff oil look like, was there a lot of shavings on the magnet. Looks like the spider gears might be a bit worn but I think you can continue driving it like that.

Ouch maybe the previous owner had ran it for a while on low fluid and it wore down the gears just enough? And the low fluid could also cause the gears to heat up while driving and maybe cause the bluing?
