3rd gen V10 synthetic oil change intervals?
Alright, I'm gonna level with y'all.... I proclaim myself to be a grease monkey, but I've heard so many different opinions I'm confused. I just bought this 2003 Dodge 2500 V10 project truck. I rebuilt it with new crankshaft, pistons, rings, bearings, lifters, and anything else I could afford. My all has gone into this motor; it's the first I've actually blueprinted. The Haynes manual says the first stage of break-in is to drive gently for 500 miles, change the oil, drive normally (no bullying or babying) for 1000 miles, change it again, and you're broken in. So, I bought Lucas break-in oil and ran that for 500 miles. Tonight, I've drained that and filled it with Pennzoil Synthetic. During this time, I lost less than 1/2 quart. I do plan on running this for 1000 miles and draining it as well. But do V10 engines running synthetic need oil changes every 3000 miles like my other trucks? Can the interval be lengthened safely? My purpose of synthetic is to make this motor run for a REALLY long time. I would rather spend the extra coin on oil than cheap out, but at the same time, I could spend that coin on my girlfriend....

Mines a 2nd gen, but I change my synthetic oil and filter every 5k and haven't found any issues with it. The oil still looks pretty decent and has me wondering if I should get an analysis done to see if I can go 7k.
Every engine is different.
what I recommend is that you get two test kits from Blackstone Labs:
http://www.blackstone-labs.com/
And have the oil you have run for 1000 miles analyzed to make sure you're doing okay, and then have the next oil checked at 3000 miles.
Once they get your samples they will give you a very nice write up and make recommendations on oil change intervals.
Lastly if they say to extend your interval you can send them a sample from the longer interval and see if you're still okay.
That's the best advice I can give you, as every single engine is different, as well as the conditions it is exposed to.

Oil lasts longer than any oil filter. if you run your oil to 7500kmi, I would Highly recc'd a filter change at the 1/2 way point. Filters aren't meant to be ran for that long.
I change Synthetic at 5kmi and conventional at 3-4kmi depending on driving style.
