I've searched every forum and exhausted every reasonable option I can think of, so now I am begging to the dodge gods for help. I've got about 106k on the truck it runs fine, no overheating, no loss of power, no odd spark plugs corrosion, no coolant loss, no exhaust coming through radiator, and when it's warm outside (60+) no CEL and no smoke. But if it's cold outside the code pops and it smokes hell. the smoke is white and doesn’t smell like coolant more like I just ran a can of seafoam through it. I just can't figure it out I'm still getting between 17-20 mpg on the highway and it doesn’t idle rough. It's always a P303. I'm going to do a compression test when I get back home but any other ideas would be appreciated.

The truck has a superchips cortex running a 91 octane tune, a k&n cold air, a fastman tb, and a 3" thrush muffler on it.

Edit: I bought the truck last winter and it was doing the same thing a week later it warmed up and hasn’t done it again until this year.

You're sure it's not using any coolant? Even a small amount?

The way it reads is that you have a leaky injector when the engine is turned off.

You can try swapping the injector with the one next to it. See if the misfire code changes cylinders.

If it is, I haven’t noticed it. I just did a complete flush and fill and changed the thermostat about 10k miles back, and haven't added any since then. I've been leaning toward a blown head-gasket but It's not like any head gasket issue I've ever seen. No overheating, and no blow through in the cooling system and after the truck warms up I can turn it off and clear the code and it won't come back until it gets cold outside again. Could it have something to do with running 93 octane on a 91 octane tune and the truck is running rich when I fire it up? I'm going to do a compression test and swap a couple injectors around when I get back on land and see if that helps. Thanks guys, I know its hard to diagnose over the internet especially with me in the middle of the gulf I just don't want the truck giving my wife any trouble while I'm gone.

Get that compression test done and we'll be able to better diagnose.

If the compression test comes back not so good, do a leak down test while you're in there...

My initial thoughts on this are that it could be one of the following:

1) Faulty Tune (specifically the warm-up enrichment and/or timing tables) - Updating the tuner's firmware and OTS [off the shelf] tune might help.

2) Bad/Burnt Valve on Cylinder #3

3) Tune is not accounting for your aftermarket Throttle Body (the bore has increased which may be putting too much air in for the tune to account for)... the OEM MAP Sensor and/or IAT sensor might not be able to accommodate the cold air (colder the air the more dense the air)

4) Bad Piston Rings on Cylinder #3

I have a few other theories but they all will be based off of Compression test results.

I mean down into the cylinder. Not on the outside.

My ram is a 6cyl 6spd, had same issue. So my question for you is, is your truck a manual or an automatic? I had a misfire code 304 which is just cylinder 4 not 3 but I went crazy for months trying to figure out the issue with my local shop. I took it back to dodge finally to have them look at it. Turned out my shop stalled it when backing it out the bay and that's where the misfire came from. They could tell because on the computer it showed the misfire occurred at 560rpms when the idle is 900. Just a thought for yea because I didn't lose any power was still getting my 26mpgs idled perfect so just putting that out there...

This is off the subject a little I have been having problems with my 04 ram 4.7 liter popping P0420 codes, cat codes. If in fact I have to replace the cat, do I need to replace both banks or can I just replace the one? Which after market cats work best with dodge PCM.

1)do I need to replace the cats on both banks or can I just replace the one?.
2) Is it possible me O2 sensors are the culprits, the down stream sensors are averaging less than .500 volt and are switching very slow?
3) Should I replace the O2 sensors when I replace the cats , they do have 166000 on them.
I know I need to temp the US and DS sides of the cat to find out if it is working, but I don't yet have an infra red thermo.
