Default 2002 Ram 1500 MIL stays on constantly

Hello, Guys: I have a 2002 Ram 1500 and the Malfuction Illumination Lamp
stays on constantly. At the first when it came on I cleaned the air filter and
it went off for several weeks and then it came back on. It stays on all the
time when it is running. Yes I have tightened the gas cap and that does not
eliminate the problem. Has anyone got any suggestions besides carrying it
to one of the "highest priced dealers on the GS&I Railroad"? Thanks for your
help!

Do all of your lights work, back-up, blinkers and 3rd cab light?

Yes,
Go to one of the big box auto places and get the truck scanned for free. That---will give a dtc, or numerous dtc codes, that lead you to what is actually causing the problem. It works a lot better than changing out parts. Your truck is a 4 wheeled rolling computer, that looks at numerous sensors all the time, if the big box doesn't help you, come back here with the codes, and the forum will.

Ditto on the scan reading. Throwing parts and time at it without knowing what's wrong is just a waste.

Thanks Neighbors: Thanks for all the replies. I will check all the lights and if that doesn't solve the problem I will take it for a scan. Is one of the scan tools worth buying? Also along with the MIL staying on--occasionally I have what I would call a "glitch(the truck just quits running for 1 to 2 seconds) and then it will continue to run without any problem. This happens about once every month and then I have had it to happen 2 times in a week. There is no indication that it is going to happen and when it does no lights come on,on the instrument panel. Anyone have a clue as to what causes this? Thanks for all the
help! This is a real good forum because of all you guys!
