Default 2002 RAM 1500 transmission help

I'm about ready to pull the trigger on an 02 1500 sport with 110k miles and the 5.9 engine. The owner said the only issue is that at Highway speeds when cruising the truck either makes a whirring noise or shifts funny and he said all you have to do is take it out of overdrive and it's fine. He claims a Dodge mechanic said this was fairly common and instead of spending the money you just take it out of overdrive and it's fine. Has anyone ever heard of this? Does this truck need a new tranny? Any help or input is appreciated!!!! Thanks!

2nd Gen 5.2 and 5.9 transmissions did have their issues. But if it is an 02 1500 with the 5.7 and it has the 545rfe trans, that's a different story. It's still a hard question to answer without knowing more. Have you test driven it? Unless you get it at a really good deal, I would pass. But at least he is being honest (hopefully 100%) about it. The last thing you want to do is have to replace it or rebuild it unless, again, you get it at a really good price.

That's what I was thinking. I'm meeting up with the guy to test drive it this weekend and either purchase it or walk away. I just wish I knew more about transmissions so I could tell if it's a minor repair like the owner thinks or if the whole thing needs replaced.

If there is a CEL (check engine light) on and if you can take it by an auto parts store, have them scan it and find out what the codes are and tell us. Then we can help more.

UPDATE: Seller and I had a big misunderstanding on the phone. He says when climbing up to Highway speeds he takes the truck out of overdrive and then sets his cruise. He then puts the truck back in overdrive. He claims this puts less stress on the torque converter to extend the life of the transmission. Does this sound better?

You say it's a good deal, what exactly is he asking for it. I would look around for a Hemi if I was you.

He's wanting 5500 for it. I just need a reliable 4wd pickup because it won't get driven much and I've always had good experience with Dodge.
