Default 05 Ram 1500 4.7l SLT dies at stop lights :(

Hello All!
I have had my 05 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7l SLT 4x4 for about 2 years now. About 6 months ago my truck died after I backed out of a parking space. It hadn't happened again until a few days ago. Now the truck stalls anytime and everytime I come to a stop.
From what I have noticed: In park or neutral, truck wont die. Truck only dies when in drive and after coming to a complete stop (as soon as speedometer hits 0 mph truck dies). If I shift into neutral at about 5 mph and then stop, truck will stay running. Truck has no problems starting up after it stalls. Truck is not showing any error codes. Its almost as if the truck doesnt know how much air/fuel/spark to give when in drive but not moving.

History of the truck:
98k miles
Spark plugs (about 10k miles ago)

What I have tried:
New EGR
New TPS
New Idle Air Control Valve
Cleaning Throttle Body
Oil Change

What I plan on changing later this week:
O2 sensors
Fuel pump and filter

Any ideas on what causes this? Once I do the O2 sensors and fuel pump/filter I will be out of ideas.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide!
John

Sounds like a transmission issue

Could be in the trans, or TC. If the TC isn't unlocking, it would cause a stall. (I would think it would cause some chugging also, like stopping a manual trans rig without pushing in the clutch)

Hows the battery?

On my kids Jeep, the battery was going. Had enough juice to start, but it started stalling on stops.

It got worse over 3 days of driving. The ECU needs a certain amount of volts in order to function, when voltage drops to low (I think it's like 10.7)

the ECU shuts down, so no spark, no fuel.

Had the same symptoms you describe. If I threw it in neutral, it would stay running. But stop in D, and it would quit.

Would also quit while driving if the headlights were on.

Tested the batt- it was toast. Installed a new battery, and problem was gone.

The Jeep never threw a code either, I found that weird.

Get a hold of a scanner that processes live data to try and figure out what is going on. Or hire someone to check it out for you. I don't see a computer reset on the list. If you have not done this that would be my next course of action. I would not throw any more parts at this. Lots of time and $$$ for nothing. Cleaning the throttle body and IAC was definitely a good try.

Thanks for the replies everyone!
This weekend I was finally able to work on it again. The first thing I tried was another transmission oil filter and oil change (since you said it might be related to the transmission). I replaced both filters and added new tranny oil. This has mostly fixed my issue, although not sure why since I just did the exact same filter change and oil replacement 10-15k miles ago.

Now the truck will only die when I come to a stop (while still in drive) and it is not warmed up (Currently its about 30 degrees fahrenheit outside). It doesnt do it everytime when not warmed up, only occasionally. It stays running 100% of the time once the truck has warmed up. It is also running much better, although it could be a combo of all the replacement parts/cleaning that I have done.

I tested the battery, it is all good. I have also reset the ECU. I have not done the fuel pump and filter or the O2 sensors yet.

I personally like working on my truck instead of having someone else do it, so i would prefer to fix this all myself. So, next question. Any reason it would only die when not warmed up? Ultimately if I/we can't figure it out then it will end up in the shop.

Thanks so much for all your responses and help so far!

Hi,

I have the same issue. Got the truck about a week ago and it dies when it is cold at the first couple stops but doesn't do it when it is warmed up. Couple days ago it didn't start when I stopped for gas. Towed it home and replaced the fuel pump. Started right up but the die at stops issue didn't go away. Fuel pump won't solve your issue.
It had 6 transmission codes pop up and the shop said there was a loose ground connection causing the issue. They replaced the battery terminal and fixed the connections. Transmission codes went away but the dies at stops issue is still here. Transmission fluid looks good also.
Have you found a solution?

I have the stalling issue when cold, once a day after driving a few blocks and stopping rpm would drop and it would stall, then fire right up. Cleaning my throttle body and IAC fixed the issue for 2 months until it got colder and came back. TPS may also be part of the issue for me as I have a fluctuating idle and surging around 50mph sometimes so will be cleaning the TPS and see if that helps.

Default Solution!

My issue was that the prior owner or their mechanic botched the transmission service and one of the filters was not fixed and floating around in the pan. After that was fixed the stalling issue went away. I hope this helps to you. The transmission shop scanned the truck while driving and figured it out that way that it didn’t have 1st gear.
