air compressor for 2002 Dodge Ram
I am rather new to this forum, but I was wondering if it is possible to install an air compressor under the hood? I am trying to find out the BEST components available to use if indeed it is possible to hook this up.
A lot of the answer depends on your requirements for compressed air. You looking to be able to run an impact wrench? Just air up tires? Paint a house using pneumatic sprayer, etc. Define your requirements then research the sizes of compressors that meet those requirements, then see if there is room to mount such a compressor under the hood. Go from there.
Not really any room under the hood unless it's really small. I have a piece of stainless steel bent in a U shape and mounted between my frame rails. In it is my compressor and 3 gal air tank. I used to use a Viair 380C but now use a much heavier compressor.
Some people mount them under the truck on the frame rail itself, other out them in the tool box, other put them where the spare tire is at

If you want something you will be using for work then get a gas engine compressor that you can put in the bed of your truck. This will be like you see on work trucks.
If you want something to use from time to time, you can get away with an electric compressor but will need a 10 gal tank at a minimum. It takes a lot of air to use pneumatic tools
