Default HELP needed - trying to fit 35's

Right now I'm running 305/70/17's on 17" moto metals with -12mm offset, which I believe is the same offset the stock 20's had. I read in the tire sticky that 35's should fit on stock wheels with 1.25 - 1.5" spacers. Would that include 35 x 12.50's on aftermarket wheels with -12 offset? What if, instead of spacers, I get new wheels - what offset should I look for? I know the tires will stick out - this is for my son and he actually wants them to stick out further than the current ones already do.

I edited the title of this post and am hoping for some experienced replies asap because I'm getting more confused. I am looking into tire/wheel packages and moving to an 18" wheel that I can get in either a -12 or -24 offset - 18x10. Running 35x12.50x18 Mud Grapplers. I was hoping that the extra negative offset might help negate any possible rubbing but the tire guy seems to think it could actually make it more likely. I really want to stay away from spacers if at all possible and my tire dealer is completely against using them. However, a suspension lift and the labor to install it puts it all out of my budget, and I really don't want the truck taller than it already is.

Is anyone out there running 35's on a leveled 3rd gen without spacers and did you have to cut anything at all to keep them from rubbing?

First I want to thank all who responded to my post - very helpful.

For what it's worth, I went ahead and had 35x12.50x17 Nitto Mud Grapplers installed on my Moto Metal 951's (-12mm offset, 9" wide) and all is well - no rubbing and they look great.
