Default Ball Joint Torque for 04-2500 2WD?

The Haynes manual lists 2500 and 3500 2wd upper ball joint to be torqued to 40 ft-lbs. I spoke with a Haynes rep who reviewed the dodge procedures and he said their manual is written exactly like the dodge procedures. To me 40 ft-lbs seems like a very low torque spec. For the 1500 2wd it states to torque to 40 ft-lbs then additional 90 degree turn. The tie rod end bolt is smaller diameter than the upper ball joint bolt, but has a higher torque than the upper ball joint. It states 45 ft/lbs plus 90 deg turn. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

You can download a copy of the Service Manual from the links in my signature to double check. If your ball joint uses castle nuts with cotter pins then you will be fine.

Weedahoe, thank you for the info! My upper ball joints do not have castle nuts. The manual states 40 ftlbs. I guess I will go with the 40. Thanks.
