Default Best cam for 06 1500

Hey all! I'm new here, I've been looking hard at camming the ram, just would like to know what others experienced with this? Any advice? Best cam? How much work goes into it? Thanks in advance!

I can't necessarily speak for spec'ing out a cam for an 06 but I am 95% complete installing a cam on my own in a 2003 hemi.

Things I can comment on:

1. Do your research. There is a great faq put together in the faq section about installing your own cam. Make sure you fully understand what, mechanically, you are getting yourself into.

2. Get the right tools. Make sure you have an inch pound torque wrench and a ft-lb torque wrench ranging from 20-140. Rent a harmonic dampener puller. If you are converting to an efan, rent a fan clutch removal wrench or fab up your own tool to hold the water pump pulley in place for fan removal. Get the proper taps to chase the head bolt threads if you plan on removing the heads.

3. Be prepared to have to buy more parts then expected. I bought all new lifters, new pushrods, new springs, all new gaskets, etc. In my case the cam was like 1/4 of the total I invested in my install.

4. Measure your clearances, take no shortcuts! Make sure your camshaft endplay is in spec, don't just assume it's a drop in replacement. I discovered that the 3rd party who rebuilt my motor previously had installed the cam shaft end plug too deep into the block and as a result I had zero endplay in my new camshaft (the old camshaft had "worn in" against the block = not good) Had to push that plug out to gain the clearance i needed. Measure your lifted preload. Ensure your springs are rated for the lift you are after.

These are just some words of advice from what I have learned with my install. I am sure others will chime in with other advice, as well as camshaft recommendations.

Best of luck
