Default 04 DODGE RAM QC 4X4 AT 4.7L PROBLEMS

Problems so far with the RAM:

1. Early on dealer replaced right side outer tie rod as part of a recall.

2. At 58K miles i had a whistling noise from the serpentine belt. Made an appt with dealer to look into it.
Day before the appt going to work lost the water pump. Cost of $430 i paid $150 cause of 7-70 warranty.
3. I installed new Bridgestone Revo's 275/70/17 instead of original 245/65/17 and screwed up my mileage, down to 12.7-14.4 MPG depending on local/highway driving. Installed a KN filter but i have no results.

QUESTION:

superchip; is it any good? my son says go with wet NOX system..

ANY ideas?

Thank you all..

Not trying to be smart but why did you list the problems which imo are not really problems at all? Dealer took care of the tie rod and 58k on a stock pump is respectable. As far as the mileage with the bigger tires, you will not get accurate results until you recalibrate the spedometer to run with the larger tires.

I have an 05 with the 4.7 and personally I wouldn't waste my money on a chip. It's pretty much tuned up as much as you can get without going with mechanical mods. If you want to change shift points and recalibrate the speedo, get a programmer not a chip. If you're wanting more power - more air in and more air out. Intake, headers and exhaust will benefit you more than an overpriced chip. Are you attempting to increase fuel mileage with the chip or power? I'm confused since fuel mileage is a problem you listed but then you talk about adding nitrous which is used in racing set-up's and people with nos really don't care about fuel mileage.

If you add NOS, which will indeed give you gobs of power, will void any drive train warranty. NOS is used as a burst of power, not continuous run. I guess it all really depends on what you are looking for in a truck.

Stock Tire - 245/70R17 Tire 1 - 275/70R17
Revs per Mile: 681.9 Revs per Mile: 646.9

Actual Speed: 60 mph 100 km/h Speedometer1: 56.9 mph 94.8 km/h

Speedometer Difference: - Speedometer Difference: 5.410% too slow
Diameter Difference: - Diameter Difference: 5.14%

So - you can add 5% wou your mileage...

An 05 4.7L with base tires will likely have 3.55:1 gears - so the engine will lug with a taller/wider tire.

You will probably have to go back to a 245 tire with low rolling resistance to gain your MPG back.

If you have a 2WD - going to 3.92:1 gears would help a lot. The change may be worth it if you do not have a limited slip diff.

Yo know, I just installed a module for my 03 4.7L ram. Company was Jett, it cost $350. I didn't see much of a difference in gas milage yet. I did notice a smother idle and a bit more hp, but wouldn't recomend it. I am replying to your post because I am hearing a sqeek noise from my belt too. I don't think It is water pump. I hope it's just serpentine belt. I just bought one today and want to install myslef. Do you know how to do this? I have looked for directions on web, but can't find anything.

Thanks,
Drew

Changing the serpentine belt should be a no brainer. There is a spring loaded tensioner which is basically a pulley with a spring that pushes against the belt so that it is taught. You put a wrench on to the back of the tensioner and turn the pulley to loosen its grip on the belt, remove the belt from the pulley and you can relax the pulley. Then remove the belt, unwinding it through the components (alternator, crank, A/C, etc). Put the new belt on, remember how it was routed but there is a drawing near the radiator or under the hood that shows you how it is routed through the engine - leaving the pulley for last. Then take the wrench and move the pulley forward and run the belt to it. Then when you let go of the wrench the belt will be taught. Note the spring is a bit hard in order to maintain the grip on the belt.

It is normal for belts to stretch and wear over a period of time. There is a white dot in a little hole on the side of the tensioner. When the dot reaches one side of the hole, it is time to change the belt - and usually it will start squealling by then. It is a wear/tear item.
