Default Transmission question

I have a 2005 Dodge Ram 3500, 5.9 diesel, 4 x 4.
I did a transmission service on it and there was a piece of the snap ring in the pan, I'd say approx 1/3 of it. I was told to get an over haul done. I called around to a few places and ONE said I can put a new snap ring in without an overhaul. Has anyone done this?

The snap ring comes from the back end of the transmission I am told.

What is the snap rings function? So where's the rest of it. My guess floating around inside the transmission. IMO I would have it go through, before it leaves you stranded. Its your call. You maybe able to get away with replacing the snap ring.

Well, lay the pieces out and see if it's all there. Odds are they're not.
