Default 04 5.7 Hemi #2 cyl exhaust rocker excessive play

2 months ago I had a loud tapping noise coming from cylinder #2 that I confirmed with a Stethoscope and then tore the valve cover off and replaced the exhaust rocker shaft with one from a parts Hemi I've got because my push rod end on the rocker side and rocker arm on cylinder #2 had some scoring marks on them as did most of the exhaust rockers but the most play was on cylinder #2. The parts Hemi had the same kind of scoring marks on the push rod ends where they meet the rocker, but it was better than what I had so I used it.

Anyway after replacing the shaft and assembling the engine has been fine and absolutely perfect, ticking was pretty much gone and the engine ran better than ever...until this last Wednesday, I started it up in the morning and the loud ticking was back and the exhaust was burbling...parked it since Wednesday and tore into it today only to find the #2 exhaust rocker with a 16th of an inch of play, all the other rockers had no play to write home about and felt like you'd expect good tolerance to feel like. Push rod wasn't bent either, it rolled flat.

I took the exhaust rocker shaft off and to my surprise the light scoring all the rockers had to some extent before was gone and they looked in pretty good shape with even wear across all rockers where the push rods meet, almost a perfect mirror finish even #2 looked great.

I find it hard to believe that a lifter could cause this as the problem went away for 2 months and I had zero issues to speak of, if it was bad before how did re-torqueing it do any good? The only thing I can suspect is that the engine needs to be on a certain timing mark before you tighten the rockers down, much like the Neon 2.0s need to be when you torque their shafts down. When I torqued the rockers down 2 months ago, I put them on as I had taken them off at 16ft lbs of torque in the [5-3-1-2-4] order on the shaft. I also think after reading a few things today that I may have gotten the rocker arm spacer between the mounting...some suggested that may be a possibility and it got worse over time.

I was thinking its a combination of that and/or worn push rods.

Fixed the problem, ended up being the exhaust valve lifter being collapsed a 1/4 of an inch.

Bought all new lifters for the passengers side head and a head gasket. Swapped it out over two nights. Truck runs like new and NO Hemi Tick.
