Default Help a lady out please?

Hello,

2005 Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi 4x4 - seems to be never ending issues with this truck.

This issue though, not sure if husband caused it, or if it's just another problem and looking to see if anyone can help me out with some info on what this may be - tranny, fluid line, power steering, or ??

Starter had been giving issues for about 2 weeks so he has been tapping under the truck (not too hard) with a thin pipe to give the starter a knock so it would kick over, he's also gone in from the top when tapping from under didn't do the trick. Anyway, long story short last night he was out and had a real hard time getting her to kick over, even with the starter tapping, so I guess he banged around some more (and I would bet likely harder) - he got it started, got it home - now there's a big red puddle in my driveway.

I know it's either tranny fluid or power steering fluid - truck was driving fine even this morning when he picked me up from work, then he told me about the puddle and (after I respectfully freaked out lol) I got under it to take pics when we got home. Oil had also been a little low, so he refilled without checking level first, now it's overfilled, I just checked it (Uhg, don't ask - I'm beyond pissed!).

There's a lot of fluid in the driveway, and since it was driving ok I'm rather doubtful it's the power steering. Couldn't find much for diagrams online for the front end - so, on that note, can someone please identify the part where the arrow is on my pic (front differential??). The majority of fluid is dripping off of that, however it looks like there's streaks down the side of it so maybe it's running down from something higher? Thoughts? Could he have cracked a fluid line? Could the over filled oil somehow make the tranny dump fluid? Being this far forward and possibly higher up, it wouldn't be the tranny itself would it? I know some basic stuff about cars, have no idea about trucks as this one is my first.

I just put another $1K into this truck in January, hoping this is something stupid and simple. Any help/thoughts on the issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you much for your time and hopefully assistance.
Heather

The arrow is pointing to the front differential. Doubtful that is what is leaking. I would clean it all off and start again to identify it is a power steering leak or a transmission line leak. If the power steering fluid level is not dropping, I would suspect a transmission cooler line.

Thank you much, will do. I thought that was the differential, but wasn't sure.

Looks like left over spillage from it's last oil change. Keep in mind the truck is 11yrs old.

Spray brake cleaner around that area to clean it and look for new drips to help trace it.

I think I'd look at the rack and pinion hose connections.

If you have a lot of Red fluid, check the fluid level in the power steering pump. If its low or empty, that's should tell you what the issue is. Can't help but wonder though if your hubby may have hit a trans line with the pipe when he was whacking it around. Good luck and keep us updated!
