Just put on my headers and catback
Hey everyone,
After staring at parts laying all over my livingroom for over two months, I have finally found the time to put them on. I got me a set of Dynatech headers and a Magnaflow catback from RPM outlet. The install went ok and it sounds great, but would like some input from you fellow gearheads about some issues.
1. Went for my maiden voyage with my new exhaust system and my first impression is that it felt like crap. Mushy throttle. I kind of expected to lose a little low end cause of the headers and all, but it seemed that it was so much that it was dissapointing. After a few weeks of driving I think the computer is figuring things out and it feels like I'm getting the power back. I just hope it's not that I am getting used to the mushy throttle.
2. Since the Hemis don't use a MAS is it possible that I am running lean and buring up my valves? (I'm also running CAI)
3. Superchips just fell into my lap for $160 bones. I couldn't refuse. Will headers and superchips cause any problems like running too rich/lean, knocks, hotspots, etc.?
Oh yeah, headers, both cats, and y-pipe are all Jet-Hot coated....
Let me know what you guys think. All is appreciated. Thanks.

The Dynatechs are the genuine long-tubes, correct? If so, you should actually pick-up some low and mid-range. This is a standard finding for these headers on other makes and the hemi ones I"ve seen look no different.
Now, here is the rub... it seems few actually know anything about the Chrysler electronics. This is very different with other makes, especially GM where every tuner in the country has the requisite software to make necessary adjustments, on the fly, as it were. One can get on a wheel-dyno and have a tuner quickly and efficiently adjust for max power and durability.
However, electronics on the Dodge is such an issue that I've heard it is why Kenne Bell has delayed his hemi twin-screw blower, problems with the tune.
One can hope that your truck will "relearn" as it goes, some makes do, within limits... but who knows? This is exactly why I've not made any siginificant changes to my hemi.
All the best. And, please keep us informed.

These trucks pull timing down low at WOT. Whack it from a roll and the difference will be quite noticeable....At least it was for me.
I ran into this w/ my old Jeep 5.9 after I put a stall converter in it. Couldn't get it to 60' worth **** unless I went about 1/2 throttle or so. They ended up cracking the code and you could kill this problem w/ a reflash, so I'd only assume its a matter of time before they do it w/ the 3rd gen Rams as well.

Yes, they are the long tubes and I agree with you, Avanti, about picking up low and mid range. That is why I got these over shorties, but when I would romp on it I was just unimpressed. I almost felt sick that I had spent all this money for it to have the launch of a go-ped. Oh yeah, with GM you can practically drive around with a laptop and make changes till you wet your pants.
Yeah all the other headers of this type are no different. I almost wish I had waited cause you can get them dirt cheap now from some dealers.
I've heard/read that Keene Bell was holding off on the blower's release date. Not surprised considering my recent results. I know someone out there is selling carburated crate hemis. Now they should be some fun. I've got a '79 Datsun 280zxr that could use an engine swap. Actually, what it really needs is to be recycled, but I just can't let go of the car.
However, it seems to be getting better. Like you said, 05, I give the throttle a tap when I'm in rolling along and it jumps into action. It seems like anything over 2k rpm feels pretty good. It's just that I can't launch worth a ****. I know it's not me cause I used to drive a stick and you can really feel a good launch when you hook up just right and pedal just right. True, I have a stock converter, gears and the pcm might be saying, "oh not you don't....not w/ this tranny," but it just doesn't feel like it used to. I guess only time will tell.
I thought of getting a flash, but prior to my fooling around the truck ran beautiflully. So I figured that I was good to go. BTW does it cost anything to get a flash done? Would you recommend I do it anyway?
Thanks for the input you guys. I'm sure things will change again when Superchips comes in.

Try resetting the PCM by pulling the battery cables off for about 10 min. When you reconnect, it will re-learn all of the basics. Then get out drive the hell outta it the way you want it to run for about 20 min. You should notice a big difference.
