2004 ram 1500 rear differential
Ok everyone, it's been awhile since I posted because I haven't had any problems but now I have a major one. I have the infamous Chrysler 9.25" rear end with 3.92 gears and limited slip. Three days ago, the pinion nut came loose and exploded my rear end (the housing is cracked). Complete driveshaft dislocation as well. Chrysler had a recall on this, but my truck was manufactured 3 months too early. I want to keep this truck and I am pretty sure I want new complete assembly. What options do I have?
Considering that is exactly what the recall is for, I'd contact a lawyer and see if you have an argument. I'm not usually an advocate for such things, but it's too close to be an outside coincidence. Maybe you do, maybe you don't -- I don't know the specifics of the faulty parts.
That said, I just had mine inspected at the dealer last week and it came back fine. That actually has me more worried than if they would have had to rebuild the rear-end...

I would look for an SRT rear end. It's a 10.5" dana 70 (I believe) and you can pick up a full assembly for $750 to $900. Make sure you get a QC version so your spring perches are on top of the axle. The plus side to this is you get a bulletprof axle with factory 4.56 gears installed, plus a brake upgrade to dual piston rear calipers.
If you're 4x4 it will cost you more to re gear the front, but I've been running 4.56s for years and love them, and had an SRT-10 fro 2 years and loved it.
This is the axle:

nitto 420s, sway bar, cal tracs and V10 not included
