Default M clips

Well I pulled my cover and found the clips in the bottom of the housing still intact. I was having some chatter only under heavy tow how important are these clips and what will happen if they are not installed everything looked and felt ok.

Found one on my magnet at 90k and put it back together with fresh gear oil just hoping it would be okay. Within about 5k my rearend was wheel-hopping and rubbing in turns when it got hot and I had to have a new locker put in it. I decided not to go back with the factory and went with a eaton detroit true trac.
Maybe you know how to work on differentials? Mine seemed fine until later.
just my 2 cents
