Yes, it could be a battery but rarely. Feel if the ground cable just before the battery is REALLY hot to the touch.
i will check this out, thanks for the reply.
what are your thoughts on my battery temp sensor not being in the battery tray? Is it possible my truck did not come with one?

Is there a trouble code for the sensor? Some vehicles just use the Ambient temp sensor out front for both purposes. Either way, it shouldn't spike you over 15Volts

no trouble code for the sensor as far as i can tell with the reader that i have. The code reader did show a voltage too high and a voltage too low code. They never have set off the check engine light but they keep showing back up after i clear them.

Just checked voltage at the alternator post and my volt meter says 14.9-15.0, it stays on 14.9 most of the time. Checked voltage at battery posts and it says 14.7-14.8, it stays on 14.7 most of the time. The ground wire does not feel hot but does feel pretty stiff.

Check it with a different meter. Make sure you're not chasing your tail.

Look for corroded grounds and any lumpy spots in any of the big positive or ground cables also. That's about all I can do without the truck in front of me
