Default 2004 dodge ram 1500 rear brake Question

What is the process of replacing the rear brake backing/dust cover plates.
Do the axles have to be remove for them to be replaced?

Are they really needed? I'm sure they are but mine are about done and this summer if I replace the rear breaks I might think about replacing them.

If axles have to come out will they come out easy?
Will i have to open rear cover to remove any clips holding in the axles?

thank

Not to blow you off. I would recommend looking up some u tube videos. Some are very good at showing how to.

I did look on youtube and could not find for the 2004 dodge ram. Other cars were there but not specifically for the Ram and I'm sure 02-08 would all be the same. As I said I could not find for my vehicle. Also searched other dodge ram forums and nothing.

First. I have been without rear backing plates for a few years. They rusted away and i completely removed the plates and all emergency brake hardware and cables...i know the possibilities of no emerg brakes...my choice.
If you want to replace them, yes you will most likely have to remove differential cover a retaining bolt and axle c clips to pull axle shafts. This will allow you access to the backing plate bolts which are most likely rusted and seized in. There are some after market backing plates which are 2 piece. Not sure if they are available for Ram. But the problem still arises over getting the backing plate bolts out.

Thanks for assuring me of the axle removal I might look into the 2 piece if available for the dodge rams.

thanks
