This is a common problem. See the thread here on Cab Heat.
It's likely either a blend door, or an actuator. To check the blend door, take out the glove box and remove the fan. It's held on by 3 screws and comes straight down. If a piece of plastic falls on the floor when you remove the fan, then you have a broken blend door. I don't think you can put your head under there to look up, but you can use a mirror or just feel around. If you feel a loose piece of plastic just hanging there, well, you know what that is (blend door).
You can look up "blend door repair kit" to see what it looks like.

I beg to differ on that jrsick. The blend door controls temperature. What you are referring to is the recirculating door, which is certainly not the problem. Recirc door only controls the fresh or recirculating option. His problem is one or more Mode doors. That being said, mine does this as well. When you choose Defrost, mine will not return to floor on its own, but I have a little trick that will return the air to the floor or the vents. Down by your feet on the drivers side, you will see the black vents. Take a long screwdriver or dowel rod, and insert it in the lower vent through the grate. It should go in 4 or 5 inches before you meet some resistance. This is one of the mode doors. gently push on the bottom, and it should move and flip all the way up. You can do this with the heat and blower on high so you can feel when the door is open. It’s a pain, but I only have to do it once in a while when I absolutely have to have Defrost on. Once I choose Defrost, it will not return to floor or vent until I do this. Of course I avoid Defrost if I can! Once I flip that door, all other functions work again, as far as floor/dash blends.
