Transfer shifts into neutral while driving
I think I have narrowed the problem down to a control module, but after talking to the dealer they want $110 diagnostic then he said their modules run from $550-$1100 a piece. Any suggestions on what and where the module is and where to get the best part for the best price?
If it’s shifting on it’s own, its probably the actuator located on the side of the transfer case. Disconnect it for now, because you don’t want it to shift to 4Low going highway speeds!! Mine went bad and was shifting all by itself, even when parked and engine off. Went the dealer route, and yes, it was an expensive diagnostic, and they wanted to replace the actuator and the harness for something around $1,100. No way!! I bought a used one for $89 as they rarely fail, removed the old one, installed the new in under 20 minutes. Not a big deal at all! Again, for your safety, and to save your drivetrain, unplug that actuator ASAP!
Your service 4WD light will come on, but nothing to worry about. BTW, it is never the dash switch that fails with this result.

OK....so I unplugged the connector going into the transfer motor thinking if the motor is disconnected it shouldn't go into a nuetral again......wrong....Truck drove fine for about 7 miles, even got it up to 75 on the interstate and when I got to the top of the exit ramp at the stop sign it would not take off again. Crawled under the truck plugged the connector back in, put it into 4 wheel drive then back to 2 wheel drive and it moved fine again. Any ideas at this point would be great.
