Default 2005 4.7L oil pressure sender removal

i have an intermittent indication problem where on first start the oil pressure gauge reads 0 and the Check Gauges light iluminates. A restart reads normal pressure. I have a replacement sending unit. Can you remove the sender with the oil filter installed or do you have to remove the filter?

Simple answer is...with the correct socket, yes you can. Old sender looked like some crud was blocking the hole. My engine and oil are clean, so I'm guessing the diaphragm inside came apart. Gauge is reading dead center.
