Unhappy Overhead console with Homelink shut down truck

Just tried to install used overhead console with Homelink (factory overhead console just had mileage, temp) in 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 w/Hemi and it shut down the entire truck. Turned key and got "check gauges" light and the gear indicator had squares around all the display (P, N, D, 2, 1, R). Truck wouldn't turn over, so I unplugged it and everything went back to normal, cranked right up. Is the Overhead Console connection that specific to the engine/computer? Is there a way to reset the truck to talk to this overhead console with Homelink? just trying to get around using separate garage door opener, but hope I didn't spend $120 on a console that won't work with my truck!

Default No good news...

Just talked to dealer and they said that they would need to "reset" the computer since it was in another vehicle and won't talk to mine properly (got it off Ebay from a "recycle yard", so it was in another vehicle - think a Ram 2500). Said it would be $165 and they couldn't guarantee that the reset would work, so guess the price of my console with Homelink just went up to almost $300. I've already tried pulling the battery cable and that didn't do any good. If I have the truck running when I plug it in, the truck will stay running, but all of the dash warning lights still come on and when I turn the truck off, it won't crank again. As soon as I unplug it, everything goes back to normal and it cranks. Didn't know that the dang thing was smart enough (or dumb enough) to shut down the entire truck!
