Which antifreeze/coolant?
Hi Guys!
The truck is a 2003 Ram 1500 4.7L; what antifreeze/coolant can I SAFELY use in this vehicle?
Is there anyone (on the planet...) who can give me a definitive answer?...
Thanks
Jim

Mopar® Antifreeze/Coolant, 5 Year/100,000 Mile Formula (MS-9769), or the equivalent ethylene glycol base coolant with organic corrosion inhibitors (called HOAT, for Hybrid Organic Additive Technology) is recommended. This coolant offers the best engine cooling without corrosion when mixed with 50% Ethylene Glycol and 50% distilled water to obtain a freeze point of -37°C (-35°F).
Zerex g-05 is the best. Will last a lifetime. Flush the old green crap out and throw this in. When I changed my radiator and water pump, (3 years ago) after all my research on the best antifreeze to use, this is what the scientists gave me. Wish I remembered the sources, but the green stuff breaks down and begins to cause putting and calcium deposits.
This stuff will outlast the truck. Just don’t mix it in, either go with the cheap green peak stuff and change it every 10-20k, or put this in and be done with it.

05 stands for 5 year life...not lifetime. Its just a oem hoat equivalent.

At any rate, it is important to know what is in the vehicle currently.

You've evidently been looking in the wrong places or asking the wrong people...pretty sure it says in your owner's manual...

No coolant is "lifetime". You're assuming he has old style "green stuff", which is funny because OEM coolant for that year truck is orange HOAT.

From what I read at the time it was the best I could use (g-05) because the Peak over-the-counter stuff is evidentially junk. G-05 is still my recommendation, because I guarentee less than 5% of people actually flush their antifreeze when they are supposed to, if at all. So I try to use the best of my knowledge, and check it. If it looks dirty, change it.
Easy as that. Reality is almost any coolant will do the job, all it is, is cooling water that doesn’t freeze. Some prevent oxidization and corrosion better than others. But the difference between the best and the worst is slimmer than you think.

03 1500 hemi came with hoat from factory.
when you get into organic acid tech coolants...they can react when mixed with the wrong stuff. the least effect would be to decrease corrosion inhibitors. oat and hoat gel when mixed. if hoat is left in too long....it/they became "acid factories" that deteriorate gaskets.

I recharge with Prestone every 4 years. All the old has to be drained then system flushed out first. The most important thing is DO NOT MIX WITH OTHER COOLANT BRANDS OR TYPES - regardless of what it says on the jug.
Pick one of any of the great options presented in this thread, change out the entire fluid volume, and stick with that for top ups. If you switch in future, again completely drain and switch over.
