Default 4x4 isn’t working

I have a 2006 Ram 1500 4.7 4x4 but whenever I try to turn on my 4x4 I don’t hear it engaging and no lights come up on my dash saying it’s on

I have checked the fuses and they don’t seem to blown and the pervious owner say that the 4x4 has worked but they said the computer had to be reprogrammed at the dealership but I don’t know much about 4x4 so I can’t say if that’s true or not

shift motor is first thing to check,,on my 04 the shift motor plug had water moisture in it when unplugged, it poured water when unplugged out on motor side, faulty design ,,check that and shift motor is usually the issue,,to pull chassis codes you need a good hand held that can read chassis codes
