About to buy first dodge. Question about mpg display 3.5mpg!?
So I’ve been a Jeep guy most of My life. Always worked on them I consider myself to be quite mechanically inclined. Anyways.
I need a truck. Looking at a 2008 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi and it was in great shape. No rust. No oil seeps or leaks. Engine sounded great. 136,000 miles.
The readout on the roof console read like 9.5 mpg while idleing. Which is whatever doesn’t mean anything at idle to me. But When I was cruising at 40mph the roof readout said 3.5-4.5mpg. The truck drove great, sounded good, felt good, responded good. I assume somethings wrong somewhere though. Are there any BIG problems with these trucks that cause them to get that ****ty of fuel economy? Or is it the typical air/fuel improvement stuff. Or Do those displays sometimes go completely out of whack and nobody pays attention to them. I’m not expecting good mileage out of a dodge but somethings up.the truck is 100% stock. Tires are stock size.

From what I remember from my 2004... If it was just reset, it takes a while to get the average without wild swings. My 04 got about 20mpg on flat highway, about 13mpg average on 50/50. Don't know if you have some terrain in your area, but I'd find a long hill to go down and just coast... shortly after reset, it would go up to 40+mpg under those conditions. Then step on the gas hard and watch it approach zero....
If you are buying from an owner, ask what the mpg has been.
