Exclamation 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 - High CO output wont pass emissions

First timer,

I am in CO and my 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 did not pass emissions. The first test had 15 gpm output and the second test (after cleaning up air filter and other minor adjustments with the air filter) had 22 gpm. Short version: Disconnect the battery for 10 min, reconnect it. This restarts the truck's computer (think of it like restarting your laptop when there is an issue, apparently RAM trucks run on windows J/K) and the CO output will go down to passing levels, mine dropped to 3 gpm.

I took the truck to CO state diagnostic center. The technician told me that there is an issue with 2008 Dodge Rams 1500s. They have not seen any other issues with Rams. The state of CO is currently working with Dodge to try to figure out the software issue; however, the quick fix is to restart the truck's computer by unhooking the battery for 10 min.

This trick saved me $1,000's of dollars in unnecessary repairs. A computer scan will show that all the trucks systems, including O2 sensors and cat are fine; however, because a technician can't find anything they will start replacing components hoping to find the issue. Rather than going for the repairs I opted for the free diagnostic service offered by the state. They are the ones that told me about the quick fix, they performed it while I was there and tested the truck for me.

Hope this helps others -

How many miles on the truck and when were the spark plugs replaced last? Sometimes simple maintenance will fix a lot of problems. I'm marveling at a state that would help you pass emissions. I'm pretty sure California wouldn't do that. I don't have to deal with emissions testing where I live so I'm not really familiar with meeting the standards.

high co means the truck is running lean. the battery disconnect must reset the fuel trim.
