Default Radiator fan

Can someone give me an overview of the electronic fan. My 04 diesel automatic originally had electronic fan but was replaced with conventional fluid coupled fan. Going up 8500 ft with it just a little low on coolant it overheated. What advantages does electronic fan have...how does it work (to improve cooling efficiency)? Had I been towing I would have been in deep trouble! Really appreciate a short course on this!

Electric fans typically are more efficient. They don't need much power to get spinning, and can sometimes be more powerful if put in correctly. From what I understand, it shouldn't be too hard to put in your truck if you choose to do so.
