Consider what happens when one adds a "free flowing" exhaust or CAI with smooth runners. Sure, freeing up the flow through the engine makes more power, but where, exactly does it make that power and at what cost to other, lower RPM power levels? Typically those add-ons gain a few HP at peak points higher in the RPM range (3500-4500rpm) which doesn't help with the daily driver's mileage. Given that our trucks tend to ride in the 1600-2000 RPM range for cruising, the goal should be to make more power in that range, not the top end.
Of course, if your goal is to whoop some pony cars and eat some rice, this is contradictory to that resolve.
