Synthetic Oil Expensive ?
I thought the Toyota's had problems because they advised 7500 mi oil changes. I also thought the 2.7 had undersized oil passages and were in high heat locations which really limited the cooling ability of the oil which turned it to sludge if not changed when it was supposed to which then plugged the oil passages even more...vicious cycle. I could be wrong though.
'99 Concorde with over 100K+ miles, peewaddins run out of it, Havoline 10w-30 and Chrysler oil filters every 2500 miles=no problems. Others (100K+), Chrysler, Honda, Mitsu, etc. Same oil, same regimen, same story. Some disassembled for high performance rebuilds, minimal residue--no sludge.
Others with Mobil-1, same regimen including OEM filters where available, same story.
Still others with other oils (usually Rotella T Diesel), same regimen, same story.
With the advent of modern high-detergent oils and decent filters, unless used in extreme conditions over long-periods, constantly clean oil and filters will take care of you and your wheels, imho.
Need for other quality filters is obvious. Btw, K&N isn't the only performance aftermarket filter maker. I've used K&N, but prefer Donaldson (aka "Blackwing") where possible--big time supplier of filters to the Military for desert vehicles. They use a synthetic matrix instead of cotton.
In any event... youse paysa youse money and take-as youse pick.
Keep it clean.

Probably beating a dead horse by now, but figured I'd add my voice to the mix.
I spend a fair amount of time reading up on synthetics vs. organic motor oils around 10 years ago when looking in to what to put in to my motorcycle. My research pretty much reflects what has been capably stated in earlier posts. All other things being equal, synthetic is the better oil (more expensive too on the front end). Synthetics flow better, are more resistant to thermal or chemical breakdown, and as I recall do a better job of keeping particulate contaminants in suspension. The problem with running them for extended periods is that they have detergents and other additives that get depleted at a rate not too dissimilar from that of organic oils. Your viscosity holds up better with the synthetic, so from that perspective it could go several times that of organics, but you loose the effects of the additives in a similar timeframe.
Assuming it costs $3 more per quart for a quality synthetic over an organic oil, that adds around $840 in extra oil change costs by the time the vehicle reaches 120K miles. Perhaps not such a bad investment. Glad someone brought this topic up - I'll have to switch the honda and the Ram to synthetic!

Hey Hemibuell..Why are you using cheap conventional oil ? I am paying top $ for top Mobil 1 oil. Synthetic oil has been proven to be the best on the market. What does NASCAR use most ? Synthetic Mobil !. My ownwers manual says change at 6,000 miles. Synthetic will go the distance. Conventional oil changes are 3,000 miles. You are paying for two oil changes to my one and I have much better protection. You do the math.

I almost bought some of that new 7500 or 15000 mile oil from Mobil, but then I saw on the bottle "Synthetic Blend" I've only used True Synthetic, and thats all I'll ever use. I've always used Mobil "Tri-synthetic" in all my cars. I guess, I just can't justify going half way on oil... it's either gonna be regular oil or full synthetic. So remember, this new stuff, is not full synthetic.
Motorhead426..Mobil 1 has a 15,000 mile guaranteed fully synthetic extended performance oil with the Advanced SuperSyn System. This is the newest oil from Mobil 1. It is NOT a blend. I bought my oil at wal-mart. It cost a little more than the regular fully synthetic oil, but is designed to go 15,000 miles or 1 year. Go to Mobil1.com for more info.

Hey silver eagle..that is my point. Synthetic is NOT expensive compared to others, but GREAT insurance. You get extended mileage with better protection than conventional oil.
