If you go with the truck, BUY it for a token sum. Even if it's only a dollar. That way your father doesn't keep talking about his truck and telling you what to do with it. I've seen that numerous times through the years. In Indiana the Governor is really good at getting his cut of every sale. If you ay a dollar, you pay tax on a dollar.

I bought an '02 from a guy at work and it needed a lot of work. The biggest was he hadn't kept the oil changed right and due to the PCV valve design, the oil pan was sludged up. I cleaned it and the pickup tube as it had no oil pressure. It turned into a decent truck.

The truck may be more trouble than you want to fool with. If you sell it along to someone else, put the money in an account and use it for your fathers care. If he's on Medicare, they absorbe a lot of your assets and this will let you get him things like a coat or new shoes he might need. The little things like those and hair cuts aren't covered.

Check the tires for cracks. If it needs new tires, that will be your biggest expense off the bat. You'll have to check out it's condition and see how much it will cost to get it running reliably on the road. If that is more than half the value of the truck, it may be prudent to sell. Junkyards can keep prices low.

Yeah, mine spit a rocker at 315K mi. I replaced them and it's back on the road now. That's the first time I've ever had the valve covers off. Horrible!
