Default newbie questions

im looking at purchasing a 02 ram regular cab auto

tell me the advantages of either getting

the

v6

4.7

5.9

id like decent gas mileage and dont really tow so im narrowing the 5.9 out , is the v6 gas mileage dramitcally different then the 4.7? this is assuming the same rearends in all of them and they are 2wd. i used to own a 5.3 silverado and it got quite good gas mileage for an ext cab fullsize truck, also what are the reliability of the v6 and 4.7 and the trannys (common dodge problem is what i have heard)

thanks in advance

yea im rather new to this forum as well but that information could be found easily by searching this website or consumer reports. gas mileage can be found in like 2 seconds, theres even a sticky at the top of the forum with what people are getting. Searching would yield many peoples opinions about the truck rather than the 3-4 people that will respond to your thread. Not trying to be a dick, but in the time it took you to type that paragraph, you could have had the answers to all your questions with a simple search.

I would go with the 4.7....... For on it is much more fuel efficient than the 5.9... It has a lot more torque than the V6, and only gets about 1mpg worse gas mileage than the V6. On avg. about 14mpg with my Quad Cab Ram 1500 with the 4.7.. The 4.7 is a bulletproof engine. It will last forever, and will supply more than enough power to a reg cab model. the 4.7 has 300ft. lbs. of tq, wheras the V6 has 235 ft. lbs of tq. big difference, and if it's auto, you'll need the extra torque. The 5.9 is really irrelevant in your situation. Depending on which tranny you get, I am assuming the 4L60E tranny is what will come in your 02 Ram, some people have no problems, some people do. I would go with the 4.7, try to find one with the 5spd tranny instead of the 4spd, better mileage, and more reliable.

The 4.7 gets my vote.

3.7 V-6 215hp, 235 ft/lbs torque

4.7 V-8 235hp, 300ft/lbs torque

The gas mileage is basically the same with both of these engines, so why not go with the 4.7 V-8? I've heard they're very reliable.

If you aren't looking for the 5.9L gasser or the 5.7L, I'd definitely opt for the 4.7L with the 5 speed tranny. This is the newer 545-RFE tranny as opposed to the 'more problematic' 46-RE tranny. I say it in quotes because I've never seen a 'bad' tranny that tanked before 125K with routine maintenance (4 of my friends have this tranny) although many here have.

Yes, the 4L60E is a GM tranny that they put behind their light duty trucks and move up to the 4L80E when there is some more muscle and heavier duty involved. Sorry if I confused anyone on the previous thread where I mentioned this tranny and referring to case problems.
