Default Dodge Ram 1500 Stalling when Stopped

I have a 2005 1500 with 120,000 miles on it. My truck has run great up until Friday and now is having some issues. When I left for work the other morning, it cut off when I backed out of the driveway. While backing out, it felt like the brakes were pumping against my foot. I cranked it back up and continued to drive out of the neighborhood where it cut off again. It fired right back up and I turned onto the main road. All of a sudden, but check gauges light came on. I looked and my temp gauge was all the way to H. I had only driven a mile at this point on a 22 degree morning. I immediately pulled over and checked my fluids. Plenty of antifreeze and nothing felt hot. I was even able to put the back of my hand on the valve cover. When I cranked it back up, the temp gauge was only about a quarter of the way up (less than a minute after I pulled over). I drove it back home and turned off several more times.

The truck has continued to cut off when stopping, but runs perfectly in park at an idle. I have not had the check gauges light come back on since and the temp gauge has been normal. Yesterday I cleaned the throttle body really well, with no improvement. I replaced the cam position sensor today with no real change. I also double checked to make sure the transmission fluid was full, and it is. The crankshaft position sensor was replaced about 7,000 miles ago. The check engine light is not on and there are no stored codes. Again, it runs perfectly driving and at idle in park. It is only when I am slowing down to a stop that it either idles itself down, catches itself and surges or turns off. The battery is two years old and I checked the alternator and it is charging at a solid 14 volts.

Sorry for the long post! Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

I didn't get any responses, but did want to follow up. I changed the throttle body out, the PCV valve, the cam position sensor and didn't have any improvement. I noticed that my transmission fluid had air in it though. I had just serviced it 5,000 miles ago. When I dropped the pan, the fluid looked good and the sump filter was tight. After I removed that filter I removed the cooler line filter. It had worked itself loose! I put MOPAR filters on this time and refilled the transmission. That fixed it! So far I have driven about 200 miles with no issues. Just wanted to post the solution in case it help someone else out.

I'm having a similar issue. How can I tell if my transmission fluid has air in it? Thanks!

For mine, I checked it while it was running in neutral. The transmission fluid was full, but very frothy with lots of little air bubbles. I have read that low levels can cause this kind of problem as well. Good Luck with it!

Thank You Very much for the reply.

I apologize for being dense or maybe just missing the obvious, but how did you observe the fluid to see that it was frothy? Did it actually send froth up the dipstick tube? Or did you disconnect the return line and have some pumping into a pan or bucket? Something else even easier?

I serviced my tranny, full pan drop and changed both filters at about 93,000 and I'm now at about 115,000. I did use Mopar Filters and I torqued the cooler filter to spec, but it's possible it may have worked it's way loose.
I added a drain plug to the pan at the time for future use. (Welded in bung, not one of the leaky screw-in contraptions) I have never seen any leaks from the plug and I did put a little tranny RTV on the threads. I also used a LubeLocker gasket and I have never seen any leaks anywhere from where the pan mates. However, I guess that doesn't guarantee that a tiny bit of air might not be getting in through the gasket or the plug somehow.

Thanks again in advance.

No Problem! Mine was very easy to see the air bubbles on the dipstick when it was running in neutral. It did not have air bubbles before my problem started (I check the transmission fluid level about once per month or so).

Good Luck!

Thanks. I checked and my fluid looks fine, not a bubble in sight. I removed and thoroughly cleaned my throttle body and the intake, cleaned my IAT sensor and cleaned and re-oiled my K&N. We'll see what happens. The stalling I'm experiencing is more intermittent compared to what you were having.
