New gearing
In a previous forum I saw some guys told a guy to get new gearing for his Ram. where would be the best place to get a set of these. and what exactly am I looking for with these. how big do I wanna go.
First you need to decide what is more important to you. Going to a taller gear will likely reduce you fuel mileage. IMO the 3.92 is a good gear for hwy and city driving but then I don't care about racing or "jackrabbit" starts. If you need mileage and do a lot of highway - assuming you run the stock tire size - you don't want to go too tall or you will be buying way more gas. If you do mostly city driving then I would go to a 4:10 ratio. If you run 33's I would go to a 4:10 anyway and any taller on tires (35's) go to a 4:56. All of these gears can be got through your dealer to keep from voiding any warranty you may have plus you may have to reprogram your computer. Numerically larger gears will in effect transfer more power from your engine to the ground but there is a trade off on mileage unless you do no highway driving. They will also help you to haul/tow heavier loads. Smaller gears will reduce your take off but give you better top end and better fuel mileage on long trips but it will reduce your haul/tow weight.
You can take a Geo 3cyl engine and run it through 5:13's and get a monster launch off the line smoking a lot of faster cars but then all you can do is about 45-50 mph everywhere you go. Taller gears cause you engine to get to a higher, optimum RPM faster - closer to the "power curve" if you want to call it that.
IMO, taller gears use less gas in the city since you are demanding less energy from the engine for stop and go starts. Smaller gears need more "push" to get moving so you give it more gas. On the highway, unless you are towing or running large tires, taller gears waste energy.
