Default Mechanical causes for cam code?

tried 3 times to post in old thread, difficulties getting it done - seems a challenge to get to and post for a few of us - what are we not seeing- doing wrong? is there a "my threads" tab in task bar? is so where, if not, can u put one in?

to my problem - 04 ram 1500 4x4 4.7 host of DTC issues all boiling down to and ending at DTC P0340 - camshaft position sensor. Replaced cam +crank sensors and a remanufactured pcm. Also found 6 wires in harness needed repair. done. still in limp mode. unreal
now we start with mechanical - my question - has anyone had this problem and what was the solution? i have the rockers and lifters ready to replace, have the dreaded lifter tick AND the exhaust leak making it sound like a diesel, i plan on doing it all at once.
First time opening up a 4.7L, looking thru service man shows many "special tools" for cam/timing chain procedures - are any a "must have" to check /adjust/replace timing chains? and the notched cam wheel - is that a concern for wear or movement independently from the cam? im opening valve covers today for the rockers, would like to be fully prepared for timing chains before i dig in.

sidebar - im considering a scanner - currently just OBD, Superchip tuner and dig. multi-meter - which full function scanner will be the best for my issues? currently have 4 other Jeep/Chrysler vehicles it could be useful for, just hate the thought of dropping a thousand or more for what might sit in the tool box unused...

UPDATE
just as i feared, cam sensor code is being sent for mechanical reasons, apparently it has been struck by a catastrophic timing chain failure! I popped off pass side valve cover and chain was off the sprocket, sitting on the shaft with chain marks on the sensor collar. Good times. time for a new powerplant.
Anyone have info concerning dropping a hemi in and what other parts ill need to replace if I do? And for the seasoned who may have ideas and opinions, whats your advice - same 4.7L or switch to the 5.7Hemi? and how about transmission and rest of driveline - 04 w 170k mi, whats next - upgrades there if i do a hemi almost required
