what generally happens is the hardened clip piece gets jammed against the bearing retainer area of the axle housing and creates a deep grove in it - weakening the cap and spreading shards of metal throughout causing bearing damage. Pull the bearing caps and have a look. The other thing that can happen is those larger pieces floating around in there can lodge between the tone ring and case - damaging the sensor tone ring. Basically if it has a deep groove you may want to find a non-lsd axle housing (no grooves in the housing) and buy an aftermarket lsd and bearings.
