3rd Gen Ram Tech2002-2008 Rams: This section is for TECHNICAL discussions only, that involve the 2002 through 2008 Rams Rams. For any non-tech discussions, please direct your attention to the "General discussion/NON-tech" sub sections.
I recently got a 2007 Ram 3500 with power locks for a great price that unfortunatley didnt come with remote keyless entry. Now since all my other Rams have had this feature I decided it was deffinetly something that I needed to add..
After searching many forums for hours I found a few threads about the 2002-2005 truck and how to add rke to those, but there seemed to be a serious lack of information out there about adding it to the face lifted turcks like mine, perhaps because most of them came with it from the factory anyway...
I could have gone the aftermarket route as many people suggested and messed for hours with wiring and had an extra fob, but I like my stuff OEM so this route was not for me.
Since these trucks are built pretty modularly I figured it should be fairly easy to add the system in like it was from the factory.... and I was right.
This procedure can be done by anone with a torx set and a Scanner or software such as Alfa OBD that can programm modules and add new keys. It also requires the secret PIN that you can get from the dealer for 10$ and a part that Ill get into in a sec.
First off it is important to understand how the RKE system works on these trucks compared to the older ones.
On the early 3rd gen Rams the RKE antenna/module is on the back of the instrument cluster and is about the size of a cigarrette pack. This is not the case on the newer ones.
The newer truck use whats called the WCM (Wirless Control Module). It is in the steering colum right behind where the ignition cylinder foes and it has a ring around the cylinder to read the keys
This module is responsible for detecting the Sentry keys to allow the truck to run. It also contains an antenna to recieve the RKE signal when you push the buttons on your fob/key since its all one key. (not seperate key and fob like some older trucks had) It also stores the key codes to decide wether the correct key is inserted and secret PIN and the vehicle VIN that has to match the PCM VIN and Pin to allow the truck to run
Its an all in one module unlike the older trucks that had seperated modules.
Since there is only 1 module now that controls these 2 functions (RKE and Sentry) and since the antenna is probably an expensive part of it they decided to make 2 differnt versions of this WCM module with 2 different part numbers.
The one beign the WCM module for the lower model trucks without RKE that only have the Sentry key PN: 05026223A Old module
and the other beign for the SLT and Laramies that have both Sentry and RKE PN: 05026221A New module
I tried for a while to enable the RKE function on my truck and program new remote keys while using my old module until I finally figured out that there are 2 differnent ones and that mine doesnt even contain an antenna....DUH!
the keys would start the truck but none of the Buttons would do anything
You will need to change this WCM out for the one that has the remote antenna in it for the RKE function
SOOO
I ordered the other module with PN 05026221 for a steep 370 CAD and got to work. Note: This module has to be purchased new. Unfortunatley a used module has the VIN and Pin from the old truck written into it and there is no way to remove this old VIN. It will cause a vin mismatch code that will not allow the truck to run.
I also got some remote keys from amazon for 30$ that work perfectly. Had them cut for 10 bucks,
TO CHANGE WCM.
First thing is to remove the column tilt **** with one T15 (i think might be a differnt size but it worked for me)
Next simply remove the 3 Torx holding the top and bottom column covers together.
pop the cover appart and take it off. You might have to tilt the collumn upwards first. wcm module above key
Now you have access to the WCM.
There will be one screw holding it on from the bottom. This is a phillips screw
Once you remove that you should be able to just unclip it from the lock cylinder and take off the connector and then slide it right out.. screw holding wcm
Put your new WCM module on in the reverse order, make sure its plugged in and clipped on all the way, then you can reinstall all your plastics and tilt ****.
Next you will have to programm the new module. This is done very easily with Alfa OBD or Autel Maxi app on your phone or any software that will allow PIN transfer or the WCM replaced function
Turn the key to run
Go into the WCM module in Alfa obd and go to active diag.
Select the Transfer secret key from PCM function. It will ask you for your 4 digit PIN that you got from the dealer
Enter it correctly and let it do its thing.
After a few seconds The new WCM will be programmed to your truck!!
Next head over to the body computer in Alfa OBD and select the 'change car configureation ' under active diagnostics
Select Vehicle Config 2 Rke system present
Change the value from "NOT SET" to "SET"
this tells the computer to look for WCM lock and unlock commands
Now you can start reprogramming your new Remote keys to the truck
Simply insert the key and turn the truck to the run positon
Run the 'program igniton keys SKIM only' function and enter your PIN
This will program the Key to start the truck aswell as all the remote functions
Dont run the 'program rke only only keys' function as this is for older trucks that had the seperate fobs
Once it dings twice take your key out and test!
You should now have working Remote fobs exactly like from the factory. Only cost me around 400 Canadian all together which is probably how much an aftermarket alarm system would have cost anyway, and this way its factory and much more proper.
Also an added bonus is that I can now enable the factory Alarm.
If you would like to enable the factory alarm aswell just head to Alfa Obd and under vehicle configurations change the Interior theft alarm setting from "no security" to "VTA". This will make it that if your locked doors are opened without the fob(someone smashes window and opens door) the alarm will go off. No parts needed, you just have to enable the function... (Only do this if you already have RKE otherwise you wont be able to turn the alarm off and it will go off every time you try and unlock your doors lol)
Hope this can help someone out. Even if it doesnt atleast I get to share my experience with you guys!!
