I have a set of SnapOn wireless microphones and a receiver. When I have to find a mystery sound, I put the microphones the most likely places and then test drive (or better, have the help of a partner) then I listen and determine where (which micro) is the loudest.... narrowing it down until I find it.
Now, less technical could be a few lengths of garden hose and a roll of duct tape. **place so as to avoid air noise as you are moving through the atmosphere
