Default Key insertion chime continues after key out

2006 Dodge RAM 2500 CTD
I've been fighting this for a couple of years.
  1. Turn Key to off and pull the key
  2. Open door and chime sounds and odometer still reading mileage in the cluster, stereo clock not on, no other lights on
  3. Closing the door causes the chime to stop and the odometer to stop displaying
  4. Batteries killed dead in a few days
Sometimes I can get the chime to stop by fiddling with the key for 5 minutes.

What I've tried:
  • Removing and cleaning the lock cylinder. It's smooth now.
  • Replacing the ignition switch (twice)
  • Jiggling the wires around to see if I can get it to stop
There are a fair number of threads about this on the net, but no single cause.

Can someone explain how the mechaniocal part of the mechanism works with the electrical part of the switch.
It seems unlikely to be the electrical switch itself, because I've swapped that out twice to no effect.
