Don't you always engage the parking brake to park? Can you be a bit more specific?

so what happened was a couple weeks ago my truck was stolen from the church parking lot. It was found a few hours later due to the person that stole it posted it on fb with my plate still on it. It was then impounded where the tow truck driver discovered that unless parking brake is engaged the truck will roll even in park. The truck was then taken to the car lot I was getting the truck from where I was then informed that no matter what when I drive the truck is I go to park I have to engage the parking brake every time otherwise it'll roll. Driving it's fine just when I go to park I have to engage the parking brake every single time
prior to this I've never used my parking brake causeni have an automatic transmission. So unless im parking on a hill i never used it before

Parking brake, emergency brake, same thing. Either your parking pawl is messed up or being a 4x4, your transfer case may not be in the right position. Does it seem to be driving normally? Is the t-case fully engaged in 2wd?

I haven't been able to check myself due to needing to replace three tires
