Flowmaster 40 series or Glasspacks?
I'm getting my exhaust work done tomorrow. I need some opinons tonight on 40 series and glasspacks. I'm looking for loudness number 1. I don't want it to sound like crap, but loud is the priority. Between these 2, Glasspacks or Flowmaster 40 series, which one do you recommend?
Also should I tell the shop to remove the resonator, or does it matter? I've just read enough post around here to know some people remove the resonator.
If there is something other than the 40 series or glasspacks that cost around the same but sound better then please mention it.

Straight pipes could be an option, but they would be LOUD.
Check out the Super 40 series. They are louder and sound a little different then the 40's. Remove the resonator, as that tones down the sound a bit.

I wanted to go with straights but some people on here told me that would lose to much backpressure. Is that true? I want loud, but I don't want it so people are like man that sounds awful. I want them to say dang thats LOUD and nice. I wanna be able to hear my radio as well, lol. Post your thoughts on all this.
Lose too much backpressure? I don't know how the computers in these new fang-dangled machines work, but the only thing that you would kill off is a little low end torque. But, you would gain it back in HP on the top end.
The strait pipes will be loud. It will be extremely loud, and could get very annoying in a street car. I started my Chevelle with open headers and it was ungodly loud. Shook the walls in my garage and set off every car alarm I passed even at idle. Now, that isn't exactly comparing apples to apples...I mean my Chevelle has 600 horse, and the 4.7 has 275? But its still 1000+ explosions going off every minute.
Go to a muffler shop and ask them to remove the exhaust from the manifolds. Start the truck and see if you like it. If you do, ask them to weld on a pipe to the rear, and if you don't tell them to either put on a muffler of your choice, or replace the old exhaust until you decide.
Personally, I would think straight pipes are way to loud. If it were me, I would get a bullet-style muffler put in place of the stock one, with no resonator. That should give you the sound you want. Look in the Summit catalog for a "Race only" muffler. That is just for the street class. It's basically an out shell with zero deadening.

I lost low end on my Hemi because the pipe was too large. It wasn't until I switched to a smaller pipe that I got it back. I'd rather have more low end than top end. Even though the Hemi is "modern" and filled with "computers" it is sensitive to back pressure. Now, since this guy has a 4.7, I'm not sure if it is this touchy.
I have the 40 Series and love it. You have to turn the stereo up to drown it out. Its not as loud as your Chevelle, but its pretty damn loud. Some people like it, other's don't. Comes down to preference.

I went with a super 40 3" in dual 2.5" out, this thing is super loud but it has that muscle sound. If you like loud and want a muscle go with a super 40. Also i have not noticed any loss in back pressure, actually I have noticed a little gain in torque.
I just put on magnaflow andx it sounds alot better than the flowmaster 40 series I had on my 4.7l. I also have a cold air intake and I definatly like the magna flow alot better for sound.

I ran a straight pipe on my 4.7, with and without the resonator. Either way the truck ran and horribly. Lost so much back pressure the truck really had a hard time speeding up. Also I damn near had to wear earplugs all the way through the powerband, fortget listening to the radio or holding a conversation. Needless to say I put a 40 series muffler on the next day. It is loud when it starts cold, but once the thermostat opens and the rpms come down it mellows out pretty nice. I run turndowns on my rig because I payed for the sound and I want to hear it, there is a slight interior resonance but at cruising speed you hardly notice. Also if you don't have one get a CAI kit. It will let your truck breathe better and give it a deeper sound when you hit the gas.
