BAAAAAAAAAAAAD night...
BIG MISTAKE!!!!
dry ground and you were ROMPING in 4-LOW!!!!! first of all....dry pavement a no no in 4LO and HI too for the most part...
and secondly....how fast were you ROMPING around....4LO shouldnt exceed 20mph.
the reason it sounds nice in 4lo all the time is because the RPMS are screaming in such low gears.....if you were flooring it on dry ground with 4LO....im sorry to say it ....but now you learned what not to do the hard way!!!

Did I not mention that it had been snowing all night? It wasn't dry pavement, and I should get the truck back from DC tomorrow... I'll let you know how it turns out...

Yes, yes you did.
Anyway, just think of it this way. In 4-lo the torque is multiplied much greater then in 2WD or 4-hi. This allows you all the power you need to crawl along in limited traction areas. If I remember correctly, the mathmatic way of figureing it out is Engine TQ X Trans 1st X Rear Gear and that gives you the amount of torque on the peices of the drive train. Thats a very big number. So trying to hold all that back with the brake, something has got to give, which in your case was the transfer case.
Sorry to hear about it, but it wasn't the smartest thing to do. But, you live and you learn and I hope you get luckey with DC. You could have just popped the rear door open while you drive.

Nope...
And they replaced the T-case and the front diff...
Truck is back in my possesion and better than ever.
I had some grinding sounds from the truck ever since I first bought it, they never could figure it out, it was usually at low speeds...
