this is my first dodge ram its an 02 with 5.9 2nd generation or 3rd

It depends on if it's a 1500 or a 2500/3500.
1500=3rd Gen
2500/3500=2nd Gen

it is a 1500 i did exhaust and added a k&n air filter is it worth buying a k&n cold air intake or is just the filter enough?

Me personally, I'd go with the entire CAI kit, I just don't see the point of doing just a filter, because you still have all the restrictiveness of the stock piping, so a filter isn't going to help you much at all.
