I replaced 3.55 to 4.10 in my old truck and it wasn't really worth it. You need to replace both diffs, front and rear. The parts will cost you around $400-500 for both. It is very recommended to purchase master install kits also (shims, bearings, seals etc.), another $100-150. Now, I woudn't dream to install myself unless you really mechanically inclined and have some of the special tools. If you take it to the shop, they'll quote you ~4 hours labor per differemtial, so you'll end up with $800 in labor cost. Then you'll need to recalibrate speedometer, especially if you're going from 3.92 to 4.56 (3.92 to 4.10 might be OK). All this to change from 3.92 to 4.10? You won't feel much difference, if at all. And if you switch to 4.56, then you definitely will have headache w/ speedometer and also screw your mileage on the highway. Hemi w/ 3.92 should be good enough for towing.

sorry, my bad.. Ignore the speedometer issue. It was true for older trucks. I think Gen3 takes the speed input from the ring gear, so it's automatically correct. The rest still applies, though...

I agree,... Hands down my first mod would be 4.56's!
I have NOTHING bad to say about my 4.56's. I get BETTER fuel economey Better off the line GRUNT and BETTER towing capabilitys... also I get LESS stress on the transmission, less stress on the engine, less stress on my warranty/wallet. Hands down WIN WIN WIN with the 4.56's.

or you could cheat and get a underdrive unit. it attaches to the back of the tranny and gives you gear splitting ability. it will also help take the strain off the tranny since you will be running more RPM's, and the speedo will still be accurate.

you'll have to get a new drive shaft, but you will also be able to keep your 3.92's

realy though, your 3.92's will do you just fine.

Im very familure with the Gear Vendor type overdrive... but its our overdrive thats really hurting us as it is with our stock gearing... The 4.56's are a step in the OTHER direction. The Gear Vendor is aimed at lowering your RPMs at speed.... the problem here is our overdrive is ALREADY to low... at .67OD our engine is LUGGING trying to maitain speed. Thats why people see a gain in fuel economey after installing the 4.56's... even though they have RAISED there RPMs on the highway... they are still getting better fuel economey due to the removed load on the engine... So I think if you installed a Gear Vendor in a 3rd Gen Ram with stock gears... you would be doing more harm to your fuel economey than good. You need to have your RPMs in a powerband thats making enough torque/HP to maitain the speed while remaing efficient. Low RPMS do NOT mean better feul economey all the time... and in our case this is a FACT.

NOW If you installed a set of 4.88's and then a Gear vendor you would have a ROCKET SHIP with a CRAZY overdrive ratio and with gear splitting capabilitys you would get insainly GREAT fuel economey with the 4.88 gears...

I also feel a gear vendor would do well behind a 3rd gen Ram with the 4.56's.... but with 4.10's, 3.92 & 3.55's you would not see good results at all... In my opinion.
