Brake Problem
Hey guys,
I have a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 and I have put aftermarket 20" wheels on it. I recently put on brand new brake pads on the front because of some sqeaking. The weird thing is that my pads were hardly worn at all, but since I bought them I put them on anyway. For the first couple of days, it was fine but now it does the same noise. Sometimes the noise sounds like metal on metal (truly horrible) but the pads have been double checked and they are fine. I thought that because I put on aftermarket wheels, they might be squeaking because of overheating, but if I start my truck up and go on a cold start they still make the noise. If I barely mash the pedal, no noise; Press the pedal pretty hard, not locking up, but very firm, no noise; the worst noise is when I am pressing the pedal to stop at a stop sign or stop at a drive-thru or something like that, at a medium push. Any help would be great, thanks.

Sounds like you should get your rotoros miced... Could be a sticking caliper, or a sticking caliper slider. I would HIGHLY recomend upgrading your brake system... Maybe just some vented, slotted rotors at minimum... Slotted and Cross drilled are better + are more astetically pleasing. But take the calipers off and the brake pads off and try compressing the pistons, if they go back in the caliper for the most part is still good. Then put it back on w/o the pads DON'T HIT THE BRAKE PEDAL DURING THIS PROCESS!!! And slide the caliper towards the car and away from it... does it slide to hit each pad mount?
For your wheels, make sure you check your clearance and use spacers if nec (if you have your old wheels you could put them back on as a check). If it's not wheel clearance then it's probably the brakes. Generally it takes a couple of tries to fix this kind of brake problem. I agree with shnormo, go with new rotors and brake pads. That's a sure fire solution. Otherwise you're going to spend lots of time and the same money chasing this problem.
i have a 03 qc with the stock 20s and my brakes were squealing so i put different pads on 2 weeks ago and they even squeak worse even took them off put the no squeak grease on them and still squeaked so i bought all new drilled and slotted rotors and pads im waiting for them to come in the mail soon hopefully that will help but the brakes are the same for the 17" and the 20" i just think dodge brakes suck ive replace the front rotors twice so far in the last year and a half for warping im tired of it so i hope these will help for the price its cheap was only 323 shipped
That happent to me to. i to have a 2003 ram and they started sqeaking i went to the dealer to have thenm checked and they were good. So i just drove like that for another month and after that they stoped. This was about 2 months ago and yesterday i changed the front pads.
