Default Ford Hurricane Engine Given Go Ahead (again)

I came across this article Hurricane Engine today and found it interesting - considering Ford cancelled the program last year.

As the article mentions, this is Ford's response the Hemi and 6.2L Vortec from GM. Maybe I'm a junkie for this modern day "Horsepower War" but I find it interesting. I would say Chrysler fired the first shot with the Hemi in 2003, and it has taken Ford and GM 4 years to respond (Vortec Max and 6.2L in the Escalade). I won't ramble too much, but I think GM is shying away from doing the same thing as Chrysler (slamming the Hemi in everything). Granted, a 6.2L Vortec is a lot more powerful than a Hemi, but right now it's only available in a Cadillac Escalade. I imagine that GM will keep the 403 HP 417 ft/lb torque engine exclusive to the Cadillac name (to make Cadillac buyers feel exclusive by having it). I could see a detuned version offered in the 07 Silverados at some level (say 380 hp and 400 ft lbs torque).

But I wonder how this new Hurricane engine fits into the restructuring going on at Ford. What about the new gas mileage regulations going into effect next year? We will definitely have to wait and see what the Hurricane will produce as far as power, but I'd venture to say it will have more than 345 hp and 375 ft/lbs of torque.

Hmmmm, what will Dodge do? Hopefully when the 4th Gen Ram comes out (I've read somewhere around 2008 or 2009), they will have some more powerful options.

Like a 6.1L Hemi that they already have and is in production? Granted it is in the specialty cars, but, its there and in production already. Just a matter of time...

Well everybody knew that unless the government steps in, that the other companies are going to compete. Especially ford. They love their trucks. Unfortuantly the government will step in and put a cap on here because of fuel economy. So the only way that people are probably going to get their super powered trucks, is to pay an extra tax like the gas guzzler tax. However, unless something changes, a 5.7l hemi in a truck gets average of 14-15 city highway combined, a 6.4 will probably average 10 witch puts mpg in the city like at 6. I may want more horsepower, but I can't afford 6 mpg. These numbers are just estimates. All I'm saying is something is going to have to change or be invented to increase power and increase mpg. Otherwise there is a cap for the market.

I have to agree with HuskyJazz. I am about at the apex of Hp to Mpg. I have way enough hp now, and them some, to get the job done. I love hp but I would not buy a truck with the 6.4 HEMI if all it gets is 10mpg hwy.
